Black Light in Butte
While in high school I was very involved in the music program—playing in the band, singing in the choir and a select group and part of a mixed quartet but, I had never seen a musical. As a sophomore in high school, I participated in a music contest and the closing event was a musical presented by Butte High School in Butte, Montana.
The auditorium darkened, the audience grew quiet and this magical concert unfolded before me; changing my musical life. Larger-than-life, choreographed, black-lighted figures filled the space with awe, suspense, and excitement. I don’t remember the specifics, but I have carried the aura of this night with me all these years. For the first time, I understood the power of combining story, visual and music and I was hooked.
Since then I have been privileged to participate in many musicals and music-themed concerts. Some of my favorites are My Fair Lady, Carousel, The Carpenter, In Christ There is No East or West, Miss Saigon, West Side Story, and Oklahoma. What are your favorites? What exhilaration to experience all the elements coming together, evoking the mystery of art. Another reason at Music Lovers Shop we are so passionate about music.
